Pennie McEdward-Rand After a nordic racing career at UNH, Pennie became a certified PSIA Instructor and worked at Waterville Valley Nordic Center in NH, then taught & supervised a nordic program in Australia. Pennie has raced in Sweden's 90 KM Vassaloppet and ski toured in Norway, Sweden, New Zealand and Iceland. She and Matt have two ski racing daughters, one alpine and one nordic so they spend much of the winter waxing, traveling and cheering on the kids.
Leigh Mallory Leigh is an institution in nordic skiing in Vermont... he coached for 30 years at Colchester High School. During that time his teams have won 5 state championships and for many years he served as the head coach of the Vermont teams at the Eastern High School and J-2 championships. Throughout his career he has attended several National Coaching Seminars, and at one time, was a Level II certified ski coach. He is an avid master racer himself and when not racing he can be found in the back country or at one of the fine touring centers in the area. He also volunteers for Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sorts. One of his proudest achievements is that he has coached some of the fastest kids in the state and some of the slowest, but they all had a quality experience and a great time. Both his children skied in college and both are now coaching. Chris coaches for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and Erin coaches for South Burlington High School.
Andy Grab Andy is one of those skiers that can't decide which skis to use on a given day... alpine, tele, nordic. "It's all good" is his mantra. Andy is a PSIA certified instructor and is one of our BKSL coaches - he will put his skis on each Tuesday & Thursday at 3:00 for two hours with the BK kids, and take them off at 7:30 when finished with masters - and he has been known to try to squeeze in a couple K before the lights go out. Wife Sue and 3 kids are bikers, hikers and skiers and one of Underhill's most fit families.
Eden Shullenberger Just back to Vermont after several years in Colorado, Eden is eager to put her long time nordic skills to work coaching. She converted from alpine to nordic at MMU in the '90's and went straight to the front of the Vermont High School and New England pack and was a top skier for Williams College. Husband Stu and two young children are at their new Vermont home in Essex and will be on our trails frequently this winter.
Rick Costanza MNC welcomes new head coach Rick Costanza, long time coach & staffer at Van Hoevenberg Olympic Trails in Lake Placid. His recent move to Vermont is our good fortune as Rick has coached at every level from BKSL to masters, to World Cup biathlon. This wide perspective enables Rick to draw on a range of skills and strategies for teaching skiing from beginners to racers. Rick also heads up our BKSL program and is looking to increase our club social and family activities. Best of all, his joy and passion for skiing are contagious. Wife Mary may join us on the trails and daughter Martina is skiing with our BKSL program. · Head Coaches – Rick Costanza and Christa Alexander · Pennie Rand · Leigh Mallory · Andy Grab · More coaches will be added if membership grows so we can keep the coach/skier ratio low. Tuesday & Thursday, 6:00-7:30 with range open for skiing at 3:30 The MNC masters ski training program began in the late ‘80’s when several skiers would meet at the range for intervals. By the mid ‘90’s we had 10+ skiers and chipped in a few bucks to hire a coach to help us work on technique. Each year new skiers would join and every few years we would add a new coach. We are now at 50+ skiers with 5-6 coaches. MNC also has 120 youth skiers in our BKSL program; 15 high school a athletes on the development and elite teams and a summer program for 50 area high school athletes with a coaching staff of eight. |
