The race program skiers start dryland training at the end of October in Underhill. Racers train on Fridays from 3:30 - 5:00 doing runs, strength workouts, technique drills, games and having lots of fun while doing it. Throughout the fall, special events such as mountain hikes and pool swims also add to the training and social atmosphere. Once there is snow, training switches to skiing and lasts through the season until the snow is gone. Practices are from 3:00 - 5:00. There are two scheduling options for skiers in the race program: They can meet either Tuesday and Friday (2 days/week) or Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (3 days/week). On Tuesdays and Thursdays, training takes place at the world class facility at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho. On Fridays, the group meets at the spectacular location Hamill's Training Center in Underhill. There are many race options on each weekend during the season for the team members to compete in. There are many non-competitive event options as well including paintball biathlons, Stowe mini-marathon, and Jay peak ('fun days'). The Bill Koch Festival hosts teams throughout New England for a weekend of fun events at the end of the season. Although it's called a "Race" program, the primary objective is ensure kids have FUN expanding their skills and instilling their lifelong interest in nordic skiing. Jumping, games, relays, skill challenges and even some more formalized training that leaves the kids exhausted and excited to come back for more! Many skiers who have gone through this program are now racing for their high school or college teams...and even the Olympic Team! The Bill Koch Youth Ski League holds races throughout the area. These races are open to anyone interested in participating. A child need not be involved in any "race" program to participate in a BK Race. A child may race on any number of race days they choose. There is generally lots of cheering, ribbons for all racers and lollipops for the littlest racers. Race length is determined by age, type of skiing and course layout.
The oldest kids ski about 3k. Some races are skate or classic but most
are either, as many kids have only one set of skis. Racers are divided up into groups by grade: Grade 1 and 2 Grade 3 and 4 Grade 5 and 6 Grade 7 and 8 Lollipopers are new and less confident skiers up through 2nd grade. There is usually a small fee to participate in a race (several dollars). The time given for a race is the time of the start of the race. It's important to be there earlier to register, check out the course, see you friends and get ready!
